Texas Baked Beans Recipe

Baked Beans, a beloved staple of Southern cuisine, embody comfort and tradition. This hearty dish features tender navy or pinto beans slow-cooked in a flavorful blend of molasses, brown sugar, and smoky bacon. Rooted in Native American and African American culinary histories, baked beans offer a delectable balance of sweet and savory flavors. Passed down over generations, this soulful side dish evokes feelings of togetherness and warmth, making it a timeless favorite at barbecues, picnics, and family gatherings throughout the South.

Ingredients

  • 2 cans (15 oz each) of navy beans or other preferred beans, drained and rinsed
  • 1/2 cup diced onion
  • 1/4 cup diced bell pepper (green, red, or a mix)
  • 1/4 cup ketchup
  • 1/4 cup molasses or brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons prepared mustard
  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
  • 2-3 slices of bacon, cooked and crumbled (optional)
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • 1/2 cup water (or more as needed)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Combine ketchup, molasses, or brown sugar, prepared mustard, and apple cider vinegar in a mixing bowl. Mix well to make the sauce.
  3. In a separate bowl, combine the mashed and washed beans, chopped onions, sliced peppers, and shredded bacon (if using).
  4. Pour the sauce over the bean mixture and stir gently until the beans are evenly coated.
  5. Season to taste with salt and black pepper. Remember, things like bacon can stale some salt.
  6. Transfer the bean mixture to a baking pan or casserole dish.
  7. Add water to the dish to prevent the beans from drying out during cooking. Start with about 1/2 cup of water and add more as needed.
  8. Cover the baking pan with aluminum foil or a lid.
  9. Bake in preheated oven for about 1 to 1.5 hours. Check the beans periodically and stir gently. If the beans are too dry, you can add a little more water.
  10. After the beans have cooked for about an hour, open the pan and continue to cook for another 15-30 minutes, or until the sauce thickens and the beans are tender
  11. Once the beans are cooked to your liking, remove them from the oven and let them rest for a few minutes before serving.

These homemade baked beans are really a must-try! They pair perfectly with cornbread, coleslaw, and all your favorite grilled meats. Trust us, your guests will be begging for the recipe!
