Homemade Crepes Recipe

Crepes, which originated in France, display a timeless artistry that transforms them into both sweet and savory treats. Their delicate structure encases a wide range of fillings, from rich Nutella and fresh berries to savory ham and cheese. Crepes, with their exquisite aesthetic and plethora of flavor choices, provide a culinary trip that appeals to both refined tastes and adventurous palates.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 1/2 cups milk
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter (plus more for cooking)
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar (for sweet crepes, optional)
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • Additional butter or oil for cooking

Instructions

  1. Whisk together the flour, sugar (if making sweet crepes), and salt in a mixing dish.
  2. Whisk the eggs in a separate bowl, then add the milk and melted butter. Mix until everything is well blended.
  3. Add the wet liquid to the dry mixture gradually, whisking constantly to avoid lumps. Whisk until the batter is smooth.
  4. Allow the batter to rest for 20-30 minutes. This allows the flour to fully hydrate, resulting in a more tender texture.
  5. Melt butter in a nonstick skillet or crepe pan over medium heat. If necessary, lightly lubricate it with butter or a small amount of oil.
  6. When the pan is hot, remove it from the heat and pour a small amount of batter into the center. As soon as you do this, swirl the pan to spread the batter thinly and evenly.
  7. The crepe should be cooked for 1-2 minutes, or until the bottom is lightly golden and the edges begin to lift. A spatula can be used to look underneath.
  8. Use a spatula to gently flip the crepe, or throw it if you’re feeling particularly daring. On the other side, cook for an additional 1-2 minutes.
  9. To keep it warm, place the cooked crepe on a plate and cover it with a kitchen towel.
  10. Stack the cooked crepes on top of one another after repeating the procedure with the remaining batter.
  11. Your chosen fillings should be put inside the crepes. You can top sweet crepes with Nutella, fruit, whipped cream, or jam. Try fillings like cheese, ham, vegetables, or eggs for savory crepes.
  12. When the crepes are folded or rolled around the fillings, they are ready to be served!

Crepes are extremely versatile, serving as breakfast, brunch, dessert, or even as a light meal. You can be as creative as you want with your fillings and toppings. Have fun with your homemade crepes!
